Voluntary University Reviews

Higher Education Institutions around the world are integrating the SDGs into teaching, learning, and campus activities. While governments officially report through voluntary national and local reviews, and governments and civil society organizations incorporate the SDGs into reporting through a variety of ways, there is no pre-existing or designated reporting mechanism at the institutional level for SDG reporting.

In 2020, with the release of its first Voluntary University Review, Carnegie Mellon University facilitated a novel process to report on the university’s SDG progress.

Three U.S. Universities have now completed VURs:

• Auburn University published its first VUR in 2020, with a revised version released in September 2021.
• Carnegie Mellon University released the university’s first Voluntary Local Review reporting on their SDG progress in 2020, with new reports released annually since then.
• University of California, Davis: UC Davis completed a VUR in 2021.
